VOLUNTEER

The Lock House Museum is always looking for more volunteers.  There are many ways to get involved and it's as easy as clicking the form at the bottom of the page.

If you love history, or maybe you love working with children, or you are handy and enjoy general maintenance then we have lots for you to do!  Volunteers are also always needed with all of our events at all levels; planning, set up, tear down, admissions or museum information tables.
The museum is also looking for board members.  Being on the board of directors gives you a special insight and pride in the workings of the museum.  This board meets monthly.  If you are interested in donating your time as a board member please contact Joanne Healey @ director@thelockhousemuseum.org.

Download our volunteer application below or contact the museum today to become part of the volunteer support team.

What They Do

If you love history and enjoy talking to people this is the opportunity for you!

The museum guide is the ambassador of the museum greeting visitors and making them feel welcome, sharing the history of the canal, giving tours of the museum and answering questions. We will train you on the history and tour process.

New volunteer guides are always scheduled with a more "seasoned" volunteer so the learning is ongoing. Museum guides are asked to volunteer a minimum of 4.5 hours/month during the season of April through the end of October. Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays 12:45-5:15.

Training is in March.

A variation on the museum guide is the school field trip or bus tour guide.  This is a well-orchestrated process working with 2 or 3 other docents and splitting the group into rotations. This is normally about a 2.5 hour commitment.

It could be school-aged children or a senior bus tour.

What They Do

The Lock House Museum hosts several events each year and without the help of volunteers, these couldn't take happen at all.

This volunteer opportunity ranges from setting up events to taking tickets, to staffing a museum booth to cleaning up.  Our event volunteers are ambassadors of the museum and must enjoy working with the public, and working as a team.

Our three annual events are; Craft Beer & Wine Fest (April), and the Candlelight Tour & Holiday Boutique (December), and other things as they pop up. The Boutique has its own page of information for volunteerism.

Volunteers can sign up for any and all events they are interested in and provide much-needed help.

What They Do

If you love old buildings or outdoor projects this is the place for you!   And the list of to-do's never gets smaller.

The museum needs skilled help to maintain the building and grounds ranging from carpentry, to painting, to fence mending, to moving furniture.

This volunteer opportunity works at their own pace and timetable and could involve lifting and bending, climbing ladders, using power equipment.

What They Do

This is a general description for the volunteer who has a special skill or a special interest in museum collections, social media, advertising, graphic design,  research, photography..

It could also be an interest in being on a museum committee or a member of the museum board. Please tell us what special skill you want to bring to the museum.

What They Do

The Holiday Boutique is always the 2nd Saturday in December.

What started out as a bake sale to support the Candlelight House Tour over 35 years ago has evolved into an important fundraiser for the Lock House Museum;  It is now baked and savory items, crafts, greens/centerpieces and a raffle.

The Holiday Boutique has many opportunities to volunteer:

Donations of Crafts, Art, and Baked Goods, Greens

Examples of handmade items could be knitted, painted/paintings, pottery, jewelry, sewn, etc. Anything holiday and general-themed items are appropriate. The Museum accepts all these handcrafted goods in the two weeks before the event.

Calling all bakers! Examples: cakes, pies, cookies, fudge, anything gluten-free, spices/rubs, soup mixes, muffin mixes, instant oatmeals, breads, cocoa mixes.  These items are accepted the night before the Boutique opens packaged and ready for sale.

If you like to make arrangement, the Greens Team gathers the Thursday before the Boutique creating evergreen centerpieces which are sold at the Boutique.  Donations of various fresh greens are also welcome. This is about  4 hour committment.

Committee Members and Helper Elves

If you'd like to help organize and be part of the decision-making of this event there is lots of room for new people on the committee. Committment time is meeting about twice per year, emails, marketing, helping with the set-up, clean up and working some of the event. Most of the time committment is in the few weeks before the event.

If you'd just like to be a helper elf and part of the festivities; help set up or tear down, work the days of the boutiques, or sell raffle tickets there is plenty o do. Committment time for this can be anywhere from 4 hours on up.

It is a large event with many moving parts and the more help the better.  Volunteer today!
